Loon Lake RCMP have arrested a man following a suspicious fire that destroyed a local church in September.
On Sept. 28, RCMP responded to reports of a fire on Main Street in Loon Lake. Officers found the church fully engulfed in flames. Loon Lake Fire Services were already on scene working to control the blaze.
The flames did not cause injuries, and the structure was empty at the time. Police immediately classified the fire as suspicious and investigated its cause.
At the time, Loon Lake RCMP asked the community for help, urging anyone with security footage or information to come forward.
On Dec. 7, RCMP arrested Shandon Chief, a 25-year-old from Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation. He faces a charge of arson under Section 434 of the Criminal Code.
Chief was also arrested for breaching a conditional sentence order. He appeared in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on December 9.
Police continue the investigation and encourage residents to contact RCMP at 310-RCMP with information.
