The Vermilion RCMP are warning people about a speeding ticket scam sent through text messages.
Residents report scams of this type across Alberta. Victims receive a text claiming their vehicle broke the speed limit. The text includes a link to a website to pay a fine.
The RCMP reminds everyone that police and government do not send tickets through text messages. If you receive a suspicious text, do not reply. Do not click any links.
Avoid using links or numbers from the suspicious message.
If you think you have been scammed, call Vermilion RCMP at 780-853-5781. You can also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit their website at https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
If you are a victim of identity fraud, tell Canada’s credit bureaus, Equifax and TransUnion.
To report crime online or get RCMP news, download the Alberta RCMP app from Apple or Google Play.
