Police charged Katz Dawson, 36, who taught at Lillian Osborne High School, with possessing and accessing child pornography.
Allan Nelson, 32, who ran music lessons under the name Fiddle & Fugue from his home, faces the same charges.
Investigators say the charges stem from online activity but note both men held positions of trust in the community.
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams’ (ALERT) Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit searched a home shared by the men on Sept. 11 after receiving a tip from the RCMP’s National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip alleged the two men shared child sexual abuse material through the messaging app Kik.
Police say they seized computers and electronic devices from the home and forensic analysis later uncovered illegal material. Police charged Nelson on Sept. 16 and Dawson on Sept. 18.
The courts released both men with conditions, including a ban on contact with anyone under 16.
ICE is encouraging anyone with information about this case to come forward and contact local police or Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-TIPS).
