MONTREAL — Montreal’s public transit agency says it has asked the Labour Department to appoint a mediator in a contract dispute that could add more disruption to a network already dealing with walkouts.

Roughly 4,500 transit workers including bus and metro drivers have announced they intend to strike on Nov. 1, 15 and 16.

They will join roughly 2,400 transit agency maintenance workers who have announced they plan to go on strike for most of November — their third strike since June.

The transit agency had been in mediation since Oct. 7 with the maintenance workers before their union said they would strike a third time.

The transit agency’s general director told a news conference today the agency is seeking mediation with bus and metro drivers because it wants to “do everything” it can to avoid another strike.

The collective agreement with bus and metro drives expired in January.
