The Saskatchewan government is urging Ottawa to back three major infrastructure projects across the province, offering to match federal contributions up to a maximum of one-third of eligible costs.

In a letter sent to federal housing, infrastructure and communities minister Gregor Robertson, Premier Scott Moe formally endorsed funding applications through the federal government’s Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) Direct Delivery Stream.
The projects seeking federal approval include Saskatoon’s proposed Downtown Event and Entertainment District (DEED), the Prince Albert Convention and Cultural Event Centre and the Battlefords Arena and Event Centre in North Battleford.
“These infrastructure projects reflect shared priorities between Saskatchewan and Canada, including economic growth and community resilience,” Moe said in a statement. “We encourage the federal government to work with Saskatchewan and these municipalities to bring these transformational investments to life.”
Although provincial financial participation is not required under the federal direct delivery stream, Saskatchewan officials say stepping forward with matching funds demonstrates confidence in the economic and community potential of the regional facilities.
Local leaders quickly welcomed the province’s commitment.
Saskatoon Mayor Cynthia Block called the support a key step for a “multi-generational city-building initiative” that will drive economic growth and downtown housing.
North Battleford Mayor Kelli Hawtin noted the Battlefords facility would support regional economic needs, community growth, and serve as an asset for recruiting healthcare workers and skilled trades.
Prince Albert Mayor Bill Powalinsky said the funding commitment moves his city closer to creating a vital gathering space for northern Saskatchewan and Indigenous partners.
The province noted that its backing for these three regional projects will not impact other municipal funding applications under the separate BCSF Provincial and Territorial Stream, which remains under negotiation between federal and provincial officials.
