The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the college’s student-managed farm on the Vermilion campus. It is hosted by Lakeland College Applied Research and open to producers, industry representatives, students and anyone interested in livestock production.
What the Field Day Will Cover
Francois Paradis, dean of applied research at Lakeland College, said the event is meant to put the college’s research directly in front of the people who can use it.
“Research for the Ranch is an opportunity to connect the work happening at Lakeland with the people who can put that knowledge into practice,” Paradis said. “We’re excited to share updates on our projects, share the latest in livestock research, show people around our research facilities and bring together people who are passionate about advancing the livestock industry.”
Attendees will get updates on several livestock research projects currently underway at the college, along with presentations from industry experts on pasture rejuvenation through drone spraying and the RDAR-funded Alberta pasture quality project being conducted by Blue Rock Animal Nutrition, according to the college.
Current Research Projects on Display
Current livestock research projects at Lakeland College include pasture water quality monitoring in drought-prone regions of eastern Alberta, virtual fencing collars for bison, Nature’s Net Wrap and winter swath grazing, organizers said.
The field day builds on a broader push by the college to expand its research capacity, following funding Lakeland secured for research and the province’s recent investment covered in a story about Alberta’s $7-million commitment to Lakeland College agricultural training.
Organizers say the event is also designed to encourage networking and knowledge-sharing among producers, researchers, students and industry representatives, with an eye toward future partnerships and collaboration.
