Saskatchewan RCMP’s Battlefords Serious Crimes Unit said the incident began early Monday morning on Oct. 20. At approximately 1:30 a.m., the Saskatoon Police Service Air Support Unit tracked a suspect truck that Corman Park Police Service had previously reported driving dangerously on Highway 16 near Saskatoon.

Police said the vehicle stopped on Baljennie Road south of Maymont, where the driver got out, fired a weapon into the air, and drove away.

Battlefords RCMP officers responded to assist and deployed a spike belt. Although the truck ran over the tire deflation device, it continued driving before coming to a stop in a field near Cando at about 2 a.m. The occupants fled on foot, but officers quickly located and arrested three adult males. A firearm was subsequently recovered in a nearby ditch by the Saskatoon Police Service Police Dog Services.

The Serious Crimes Unit took over the investigation, with assistance from Battlefords and Saskatoon Forensic Identification Services.

The following individuals have been charged:

  • Walker Higgs, 23, of Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation, is charged with careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm while prohibited, failing to comply with a probation order, and operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.

  • Dennis Higgs, 24, of Saskatoon, is charged with possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm while prohibited, and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

  • Darnell Starblanket, 25, of Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation, is charged with possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle and failing to comply with a probation order.

All three suspects appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Oct. 21.
