The multi-time national champion Lakeland College Rustlers women’s volleyball team kept their early-season roll going on Friday night, sweeping the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 3-0 in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action.

Coming off historic back-to-back national championship campaigns, the Rustlers improved to 2-0 on the young season. Medicine Hat dropped to 1-2.
Carly Hawryluk led the charge for Lakeland offensively, putting down a match-high 11 kills while adding 3 digs and a solo block. Setter Katelyn Mazurkewich orchestrated the attack smoothly, dishing out 25 assists to go with two service aces and two digs. Olivia DeDecker chipped in 7 kills and a team-high 9 digs.

As a team, Lakeland hit .194 on the night with 28 kills, capitalizing on 21 attacking errors from Medicine Hat. The Rustlers’ block proved to be a major factor at the net, accumulating 3 solo blocks and 18 block assists.
Jaivyn Barabe paced the Rattlers with 6 kills and 7.5 points, while Carly Penner recorded 15 assists. Despite a tightly contested second set that pushed into extra points, Medicine Hat struggled to find offensive consistency against the reigning powerhouse, finishing with a negative -.014 team hitting percentage.
Lakeland will look to build on its momentum as the conference schedule continues.
