Momentum is sweeping toward the Border City’s provincial curling event as the Lloydminster and District Co-op steps up with a major $20,000 sponsorship.

The funding was announced as local organizers prepare to host the 2027 CURLSASK Provincial Curling Championship — featuring the Men’s SaskTel Tankard and Women’s Bunge Prairie Pinnacle—at the Cenovus Energy Hub from Jan. 11 to 17, 2027.

Tess Wack, director, marketing and community relations with the Lloydminster and District Co-op, noted that because the city hasn’t hosted a curling event of this caliber before, stepping in to support grassroots growth and future athletic potential was a priority.

“We have not seen a curling event of this calibre in Lloydminster,” Wack said. “It was really important to us to step up and be a part of it and help them bring it, because I also know that then that helps grow the curling club and grow the potential for other curling events in the future.”

Co-op’s contribution comes with no strings attached, leaving organizers flexibility to allocate the funds toward high event expenses at the Cenovus Energy Hub.

Tournament co-chair Tami Holtby emphasized that beyond the financial boost, the partnership brings invaluable community-building energy, ideas, and collaborative support for upcoming features like a youth zone.

“The dollars are fabulous, but I love the support and the ideas, and what else can we do? What can we do for the kids when they’re there?” Holtby said. She added that any excess revenue generated from ticket sales and operations will go directly back to supporting the local curling club.

Fellow co-chair Laurie Makichuk highlighted that unlike past local bonspiels, this is an official provincial championship path directly feeding national events like the Montana’s Brier and Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

With major sponsors like the Co-op, New Holland, and local businesses contributing everything from food concepts to volunteer jackets by North Shore, excitement is building rapidly. Box seating is nearly sold out, and organizers are shifting focus to community engagement and volunteer recruitment.

Pre-Christmas event passes are currently on sale for $180 and will be available at upcoming community Christmas markets. Residents interested in volunteering for shifts during the January tournament can reach out to local organizers or follow the Lloydminster Curling Club social media channels for updates.
