The Airdrie-based writer, who began his career in the late 1990s as a freelance columnist for three north-central Alberta newspapers, describes his latest release as an “atomic bomb” compared to the conventional weapons of his previous editions.

“Basically, it’s about cutting the legs out from under everything liberal governments have ever done,” Willerton said in a recent interview. “They’re all liberal — some are just worse than others.”

The book’s foundation rests on direct, uncensored columns Willerton originally penned for the Barrhead Leader, the Westlock News, and the Athabasca Advocate. To ensure the material stays current with the shifting political landscape, each column is accompanied by updated commentary and analysis.

Willerton says his goal is to connect history and current events like puzzle pieces, presenting them in a straightforward manner that breaks past the traditional Canadian political landscape.

“We’ve been in this blue-red paradigm for 160 years and this is where it’s gotten us,” Willerton said. “If we continue to think it’s going to change if we go back to the blue for four or eight years, we’re dreaming. We need to think outside the box.”

First published in the fall of 2000, the Fix Canada series has steadily evolved. Willerton notes that the book draws strong reactions from across the political spectrum, noting some readers pass it down to grandchildren while others would gladly burn it.

Despite the polarizing content, Willerton says the project remains an incredibly fulfilling journey that allows him to plant seeds and help readers make more informed decisions at the ballot box.

“I’ve heard from people who claim they learn something on every page,” he said.

The promotional tour for the 23rd edition recently brought Willerton through Lloydminster following a stop in Cochrane, Alta.

Willerton plans to remain on tour promoting the new edition until the copies are gone. More information and book orders can be found on his official website at fixcanada.ca.
