Two Grade 11 students at Holy Rosary High School (HRHS) are proving that workplace safety isn’t just about rules — it’s about winning gold.
Luc Lehmond and Ryelan Hassan took first place in the 2026 WorkSafe Saskatchewan Youth Video Contest for their production titled Safety Olympics. The win marks a continuation of the school’s dominant streak in the competition and secures the pair a spot in the national finals.

The winning video uses a game show format to highlight safety in the trades. Lehmond stars as the host, guiding contestants through challenges to determine who is the safest on the job.
“The video brought a bunch of the trades together,” Lehmond said. “It showed it wasn’t just about winning and being the best. If you’re safe, you win.”
The production was filmed primarily at the school’s Synergy Studios and welding shop. To meet contest regulations, the pair had to keep the final edit under two minutes, ultimately clocking in at 1:55.
The duo divided the workload according to their strengths. Hassan handled the majority of the camera work and scriptwriting, while Lehmond focused on acting and the final edit.
“Ryelan’s better with the camera,” Lehmond said. “She’s also very creative and I’m not as familiar with the camera work.”

Teacher Skye Ferguson, who has integrated the contest into her curriculum for years, said the project serves as a practical warmup for the Skills Canada competitions.
“They’re not always the most interested in this topic … it takes a bit more push to want to make a video like this,” Ferguson said. “I’m always proud of them, not only for them getting money, but also for the program — it shows what they can do.”
The victory comes with a financial windfall. Each student received $750, while the HRHS media program was awarded $3,000.
While most of the prize money is headed into savings, Lehmond did treat himself to a new pair of sunglasses. Hassan noted that the school’s portion of the winnings will help expand their learning by providing access to new equipment.
“The equipment we currently have is because of students like Luc and Ryelan,” Ferguson said. “We purchased our equipment with funds won through contests.”
The Safety Olympics went on to represent Saskatchewan in the national Focus on Safety Youth Video Contest, hosted by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), where it won a national silver medal.
The pair’s winning streak is already growing; Ferguson noted they also secured the safety medal at a Skills Canada competition last week.
