The advisory, issued in coordination with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and Onion Lake Emergency Medical Services, highlights a series of drug poisoning incidents that occurred between July 1 and July 8.
According to the community notice, the substance is described as a brown-coloured drug that is sometimes packaged in a black bag. It is being sold locally as “down” or fentanyl, and is believed to contain fentanyl or other unknown opioids.
In all reported cases, the substance was smoked.
Health officials say several of the overdoses required emergency medical treatment, with one individual requiring care in an emergency department’s intensive care unit.
First responders administered naloxone to victims with varying results. The alert notes that multiple doses of the opioid-reversing treatment may be required, and warns that naloxone will not counter the effects of non-opioid substances if the drug is mixed.
Local leadership and health authorities are urging residents to take harm-reduction measures, including:
- Calling 911 immediately if someone is suspected of overdosing.
- Carrying a Take Home Naloxone Kit, which can be located by calling HealthLine 811.
- Using supervision services, such as calling the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888-688-6677 if using substances alone.
- Utilizing drug checking services to test substances before use.
Officials also reminded the public that the federal Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act protects anyone seeking emergency help during an overdose from being charged with simple drug possession.
The local drug alert remains in effect until July 16.
