Alberta RCMP is urging residents to take extra precautions to protect their vehicles and belongings from theft during summer outdoor activities.

Police say popular destinations like campsites and trailheads often present quick opportunities for thieves looking to target unlocked or unattended vehicles.
“Theft of vehicles is often a crime of opportunity,” the RCMP said in a release. “A quick trip into the convenience store is all the time a thief needs to steal a running vehicle.”
To reduce the risk, Mounties recommend keeping vehicles locked at all times — even when nearby — and closing windows fully when leaving a vehicle.
Drivers are also advised to remove keys, garage door openers and documents containing personal identifying information from their vehicles. Police warn that stolen keys and personal information can be used to break into homes.
For campers and outdoor enthusiasts, Mounties advise:
- Securing high-value gear such as off-highway vehicles, bicycles, and kayaks.
- Using window covers to conceal the vehicle’s interior.
- Installing hitch locks on trailers to prevent towing theft.
- Setting up motion-sensor lights outside recreational vehicles.
