The installation features a unique design crafted by local artist Katie Messmer. Inspired by a concept from Europe, the metalwork features three silhouettes of soldiers cresting a hill, framed by vibrant red 2D poppies that appear to blow in the wind. Single metal petals drift across the piece to symbolize individual stories and memories shared through generations.
“It’s about keeping the stories alive, keeping their history alive, remembering why we have the Legion and what they’re for,” Messmer said of her design.

Legion President Heather Klages said the response from members and the community has been overwhelmingly positive. Initially planning a single tribute, the branch expanded the project after a suggestion to commission a second matching bench to be displayed inside the Legion hall was brought forward.
“It’s very emotional,” Klages said, noting how the installation overlooks headstones of local service members. “The first time we came out to see the bench, I was surprised at how overcome I was with emotion. It just really touches my heart.”
Mayor Gerald Aalbers praised the collaboration between local donors, the artist and the Legion, highlighting the city’s commitment to maintaining the site.
“The Legion is more than about the military; they’re about youth, community and giving back,” Aalbers said, encouraging community members to get involved during the organization’s milestone centennial era.
The cemetery bench has been officially gifted to the city and is now open for visitors to take pause, reflect, and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
