The quick sellout follows last week’s news that the Border City had been selected to host a World Juniors pre-tournament game, and it suggests Lloydminster hockey fans wasted no time grabbing a seat for a rare look at international junior talent before the main event gets underway.
The game is part of the lead-up to the 2027 World Junior Championships, which will be held in Edmonton and Red Deer this winter. Lloydminster is one of a handful of Alberta communities chosen to host an exhibition tune-up, giving fans outside the two host cities a taste of the tournament atmosphere without the trip.
Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Cenovus Energy Hub.
Lloydminster adopts Team Latvia
Beyond hosting the game itself, Lloydminster is embracing Team Latvia as its adopted hometown squad for the event. The team will train at the Cenovus Energy Hub in the days leading up to the game, and residents are being encouraged to turn out in maroon and white to help welcome the players and staff.
It’s the kind of hosting role the Border City has leaned into before. Local minor hockey programs, including the Bobcats at the Junior A Challenge, have given Lloydminster fans a taste of higher-level competition in recent years, and an international tune-up game raises that profile another notch.
What’s next for fans who missed out
With online sales gone, organizers are encouraging fans to keep an eye on updates in case additional tickets become available closer to game day. Anyone hoping to attend should watch for announcements through the Cenovus Energy Hub and the City of Lloydminster rather than assuming the door is closed for good.
For families who do have tickets in hand, the evening promises a packed building and a genuine taste of World Junior energy without leaving the Border City. For those who don’t, it’s a reminder that when Lloydminster gets a shot at hosting something big, it doesn’t take long for the community to show up.
