On Oct. 6, Cold Lake RCMP officers attended a residence on 52 Ave. while investigating a report of stolen property. When officers arrived, they spotted a known prolific offender, Shawn Piche, 40, fleeing from the back of the home.
Police say Piche, who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large, was seen carrying a shotgun as he ran from the scene. Officers pursued him on foot, eventually arresting him following what RCMP described as a high-risk takedown on 51 Ave.
A loaded shotgun and several rounds of ammunition were seized during the arrest.
Piche is now facing several charges, including:
- Obstruction
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Possession of a prohibited weapon with readily available ammunition without authorization
- Possession of a firearm contrary to a firearms prohibition order
He was remanded into custody following a hearing before a justice of the peace and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Cold Lake on Oct. 15.
