Police say a combination of ice, snow-covered lanes, drifting and blowing snow, strong winds and road closures or detours are affecting both road conditions and visibility.
RCMP also report a semi-truck fire on Highway 1 near Secretan (west of Regina). Officers are on scene and both lanes of the highway in the area are closed for an undetermined period. Road conditions in the area are described as very poor due to ongoing freezing rain and motorists are urged to slow down and use caution if travelling nearby.
Drivers are encouraged to check weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling. If poor conditions exist or are expected, RCMP recommend delaying travel when possible. Those who must travel are advised to use roads that have recently received maintenance.
Up-to-date road condition information, including which highways have been plowed, salted or sanded within the past two hours, is available through the provincial Highway Hotline map.
RCMP is also reminding the public not to call 911 or local detachments for road condition updates. Emergency lines must be kept open for crimes in progress and life-threatening situations, police said.
More information on preparing for winter driving is available through provincial safety resources.
