Four Holy Rosary High School student-athletes are ending their high school sports careers on a high note with commitments to post-secondary athletics and the Canadian Junior Football League.

Briza Zacharias has committed to the University of Minnesota Crookston to obtain a science degree in Sport Management and will be playing for the school’s Golden Eagles Softball team.

Connor Daschuk will be going to Brock University for the Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice program and hopes to get into a career in law. Daschuk will also be on the Brock University Swim Team.

Liam Gilby will be attending the University of Victoria in the fall for Engineering and will be rowing for the UVic Row Team, and Raiders’ safety, Tyler Gerwing, will further his football career with the Edmonton Wildcats football team while apprenticing in auto body with dreams of becoming a custom fabricator to build trucks.

Gilby, 18, explained he is super excited about the opportunities ahead, especially considering he’s only been rowing for just over a year.

“I started about a year and a couple of months ago. I really loved it; I trained all winter and it just clicked from there,” he said.

“At Victoria, they prioritize the double and the four for the light-weight team. I’m going to be on the light-weight team out there, so hopefully, by the middle of my first year and the start of my second year, I should be on the light-weight four and having a good time out there.”

Gilby gives credit to local coaches Shelby Lane and Michelle Lopez for helping him see his potential and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Daschuk, also 18, started swimming with the Lloydminster Rebels at age 10 and most recently has been training with the Lloydminster Riptides winter club.

“My specialty in the pool is sprinting, specifically 50 metres of free. That’s my favourite event, it always has been, ever since I started I got pretty good at it right away,” he said, adding he also competes in 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

Daschuk wanted to thank his coaches and family for helping him get to where he is today and is looking forward to training alongside his brother at Brock.

“My brother committed to the same school two years ago and my sister also goes there for hockey,” he said.

Daschuk also explained he’s looking forward to working with the school’s new coaches.

“I think they can push me to be the best I’ve ever been and can get me further than I’ve ever dreamed of going,” he said.

Tyler Gerwing, a 17-year-old Raiders safety, can’t wait to continue his football career with the Edmonton Wildcats, playing out of the Prairie Football Conference of the Canadian Junior Football League.

“It gave me chills thinking about moving from level to level,” he said. “I started in peewee in Grade 4 and now I’m going to play on a big team. Going up level to level and seeing the big coaches recognizing you is amazing; it definitely makes me happy and I’m really excited to keep moving forward.”

With the Wildcats, Gerwing is hoping to get a couple of interceptions, a Pick 6, as well as “hit some kids.”
