“Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.” Gus Schmidt: Surrounded by his loving family, Gus peacefully departed this world on Friday, August 25, 2023, at the age of 87. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Gus was born on November 1, 1935, in Edam, Saskatchewan. He was one of 13 siblings. His parents’ homestead was in Fairholme, Saskatchewan. When his parents moved to North Battleford, Saskatchewan, the homestead was sold for community pasture. Gus then moved north of St. Walburg, Saskatchewan, where he lived with his sister and her husband, Tom and Betty Robertson. Gus met Helga in St. Walburg, Saskatchewan. They were married on June 11, 1966. They moved to Lloydminster that same year. They had three children: James, Sheryl, and Sheldon. Gus worked as a mechanic at Willms Transport, Universal, and Mike’s Oilfield. Gus became a member of the Moose Lodge on February 18, 1978, and remained a member until 2023. The current building (where the Moose Lodge is located) was moved from the Wainwright area to its present location. Gus volunteered with the relocation process. He was an integral part of the setup of the lodge. He managed and organized the Moose Lodge Bingos for over twenty years. Gus even called Bingo for many years. His legacy at the Moose Lodge will continue for years to come. Gus enjoyed getting together with friends playing hand and foot canasta on Friday and Saturday nights. He loved watching hockey and football. His favourite teams were the Calgary Flames and Calgary Stampeders. Gus would stop and talk to anyone. He always liked to joke. Sometimes, getting a serious answer out of him was impossible because of his playful side. Gus is lovingly remembered by his wife, Helga; children, James Schmidt, Sheryl Luck and Sheldon Schmidt; grandchildren, Megan Luck (Shaun Gair) and Mitchell Luck; siblings, Betty Robertson, John (Barbara) Schmidt, Minard Schmidt and Mary Mazurek; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Gus was predeceased by his parents, Simon and Veronica Schmidt; siblings, Valentine Schmidt, Margaret Schmidt, Ann Ste. Marie, George Schmidt, Tony Schmidt, Ralph Schmidt, Rose Moser, Paul Schmidt and Joe Schmidt. A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge Lloydminster, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation or The Red Cross. These charities were very important to Gus. He especially loved animals. Gus’s family would like to thank everyone for their tributes, phone calls, messages, cards, and flowers. Thank you to Donald and the staff at McCaws Funeral Home. Thank you to all the staff at the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre in Lloydminster. The loving care you gave our dad is much appreciated and will never be forgotten.
