From Wimbledon to the Australian Open right down to Bud Miller Park, tennis appeals to many players worldwide.
Whether it be the ability to take your frustrations out on a little round ball, make friends or push yourself to the limit, the sport provides many outlets.
13-year-old Luke Thomsen has been playing the sport for eight years. His favourite player is Roger Federer, and he hopes to go further than the Sask. Summer Games someday.
“It’s just kind of the sport I grew up playing, I just love the game,” said Thomsen before his match Tuesday morning.
Luke loves the experience of the games. Although he’s from Lloydminster, he’s experiencing life inside the high school with 900 athletes for the first time.
“It’s really fun, they have lots of really cool stuff to do when we aren’t playing and they have really great food!”
Coach Warren Aguinaldo is the leader of team River West, which Luke is a part of. He’s also been his coach for many years. Aguinaldo comes from a background of playing both tennis and soft tennis all over Canada and internationally. He sees the good which can come from a tournament like this.
“For one, I hope it kind of inspires them to want to stick to tennis and kind of continue (to be) part of our club and playing more tournaments in the area,” stated Aguinaldo. “I hope it also, can builds connections for them with the other cities, because there’s a lot of good players out there, and there’s a lot of like just good kids that play.”
As for Luke, he has all the tools of a good young athlete a credit the coach gives to his parents. He says he’s fiery and brings swag to the game and loves watching him play.
“He’s not super emotional on the court, but he’s got the skills. He’s got the tool set. but yeah, he’s, he’s a swaggy kid.”
Thomsen loves the game, loves the time on the court and wants other kids to share in his passion.
“Come out and try it, if you like it, get lessons”
Tennis wraps up at Bud Miller Park Wednesday afternoon.
