Lloydminster council has approved appointments of new and returning members of the Downtown Area Redevelopment Committee.
At the Aug. 19 council heard the presentation by Kirsten DeSchover. The request to council was to appoint Monika Kelly to a four-year term commencing on Sept. 1. In addition, council approve Ben Harrison, Becky Schille, Cherly Ross and Steven Hickman to the committee for a two-year term.
Coun. Lorelee Marin had positive things to say about the work the committee has been doing.
“I just would like to commend the committee members on their work to support the downtown area redevelopment,” she said. “Sometimes they experience some negative comments from our community and yet they are committed to the vision of creating a vibrant downtown, a place we can all be proud of.”
Marin says she’s seen a shift in some of the commentary about the vibrancy of downtown.
Coun. Jonathan Torresan also noted the impact that the committee has had.
“They’ve been incredibly valuable I think to the process overall to how we do the advisory committee that it is,” he explained. “They’ve made a lot of headway from what was a brand-new committee to something that’s gotten things done.”
Torresan also explains that you can see the impact the committee has had through their various programs and services such as the downtown façade improvement.
Council voted to pass the motions to appoint and reappoint the members of the committee.
The Committee is established to advise on the implementation of the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP). This plan’s purpose to serve as a framework for the redevelopment of downtown Lloydminster. From construction of roads and infrastructure to public space and events, the DARP outlines an action plan intended to revive the downtown and make it a show piece of Lloydminster.
