A fire involving a transport truck closed Highway 16 west of Kitscoty on Sept. 4.
Vermillion River Fire Department fought the flames shortly before 9 p.m. A social media post from the department explains their response.
“A semi-truck blew a tire just before the Highway 893 intersection, causing a fire that rapidly spread to the loaded trailer. Passerby’s called 9-1-1 while others worked to separate the semi from the trailer.
Alarms sounded triggering a response from surrounding fire departments shortly before 9 p.m.
“Large flames, between 40 to 60 feet high, combined with heavy smoke forced the closure of Highway 16 Westbound while Firefighters tackled the blaze, stabilized the scene and treated the driver,” read a Facebook post from Protective Services County of Vermilion River.
Crews worked to cool the attached diesel tank while extinguishing flames from the cargo contents of the trailer and the spreading field fire. Due to the complexity of the call at that stretch of roadway and the need for additional water, a second alarm was sent to Vermilion Fire Department.
Emcon Services inc were on-scene assisting with traffic detours as Action Towing & Recovery Service worked to remove debris and load the damaged trailer.
No cause for the fire has been identified at this time.
According to Kirk Hughes, the county fire chief, crews remained on scene into the early morning hours.
The roadway has since reopened, RCMP are investigating.
