Lloydminster Council has approved the sale of four properties that still have outstanding tax payments to make.
There are currently four Alberta properties with tax liens registered against them from the prior year.
“In this case we have four properties, well, three for sure. The fourth they’re working to get rid of the tax lien,” said Lloydminster Mayor Gerald Aalbers.
“When property taxes are not paid on a property after a period of two years in this case, there’s lien’s put against the property.”
According to Consolidated Credit Canada, “A tax lien is a legal claim. It is against the assets of an individual or business. For a tax lien to arise, the entity has failed to pay taxes.”
If a property is not able to get rid of their tax lien it will have to be put up for public auction to be resolved.
Owners can pay for their missing taxes before the auction to avoid it going to public bid.
“Until the very last day before the auction, the day before the auction basically we’re open to negotiations and settling it as quickly as we can or coming up with a payment schedule they’re prepared to live with,” explained Aalbers.
“Two properties were in that position and they weren’t able to maintain that payment schedule, so now they are back into that position, they could be up for property tax sale.”
If the parcels of land make it to public auction they will be offered on an “as is, where is” basis.
Bidders must register with the City of Lloydminster ahead of time by providing their, bidder’s name, phone number, and e-mail address to taxes@lloydminster.ca or by calling 780-875-6184 ext. 2124.
