Lloyd RCMP to launch anti-theft campaign

Lloydminster RCMP is launching Operation Cold Start to tackle thefts of idling vehicles this winter.

The initiative, running from Jan. 20-24, focuses on preventing crimes of opportunity. Officers will inspect unattended vehicles to ensure they are locked and secure, with no keys left inside.

“Please be vigilant during the cold winter days and not make your vehicle or property easily accessible to thieves,” said Const. Michelle Walz with Lloydminster RCMP Traffic Services. “As temperatures drop, idling vehicles become an easy opportunity for criminals.”

In 2024, dozens of idling vehicles were stolen in Lloydminster. These thefts caused inconvenience for owners and often led to other crimes. Stolen vehicles are sometimes used in illegal activities or sold to unsuspecting buyers.
