District governor, Brian Edwards, visited the Rotary Club of Lloydminster ahead of their regional conference, giving some valuable insight into the club’s operations.
Edwards attended the Jan. 27 meeting and had high praise for the Lloydminster organization.
“Your club has a long and proud history, chartered in 1929. That’s something to celebrate,” he said.
Edwards says it’s important for him to see the clubs and their activities first-hand.
“It’s important for me to visit the clubs in our district, understand what they’re doing, and share their good work with others,” said Edwards of his visit. “I also want clubs to see they’re part of a larger district and a greater Rotary organization. If I can bring fresh ideas, insights, and opportunities for them to consider, it benefits everyone.”
He complimented their social media presence, noting people are paying attention to their actions. He also noticed the club has a fantastic reputation in the community, which helps them significantly.
“You have done an amazing job maintaining its membership through COVID, which is something not every club can say,” said Edwards. “The fact you have a strong base of long-term members speaks to the club’s welcoming environment and commitment to service.”
One suggestion he did have was focusing on getting younger members of the community involved.
“Engaging younger professionals is a challenge for many clubs. It’s something to keep working on to ensure long-term sustainability,” he suggested.
Edwards says good promotion may be a way to get new people at Rotary.
“While your club does a lot of great service projects, promoting them more effectively could also help attract new members,” he said.
Tara Shirtliffe is the current president of the local club and says having Edwards attend is important for members to hear from their district governor.
“I think it’s important for the club members to hear from the district governor of what his dream is, what his plans are and about his passion for Rotary,” said Shirtliffe.
Rotary is keeping busy ahead of the regional conference as the first draw for the Dream Vacation is fast approaching. Tickets are available at Vivid Salon or by calling Anita at 780-874-9067.
