Loon Lake RCMP arrested two people after a traffic stop on Island Lake First Nation uncovered stolen ID, a firearm, and drugs.

On March 14, officers stopped a vehicle during a routine traffic safety check. The driver failed to provide a valid license and gave officers a false name. Further investigation led to the seizure of numerous stolen ID and financial cards, a sawed-off firearm, ammunition, and crystal methamphetamine.

RCMP arrested 28-year-old Jarett Scanie and 30-year-old Geneva Williams, both from Cold Lake, Alta. They face multiple charges, including possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a prohibited firearm without a license, and unauthorized use of credit card information.

Scanie also faces additional charges, including obstructing a peace officer and operating a vehicle while prohibited. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Loon Lake Provincial Court on March 20. Williams will appear in court on April 17.

Sgt. Earl Keewatin with the Loon Lake RCMP highlighted the importance of traffic stops in preventing crime.

“Traffic check stops are an effective tool to help keep a community safe. We all know that they help officers take unsafe drivers off the street – and we did issue three roadside suspensions for alcohol or cannabis use that night. It’s also important to highlight that check stops also help us detect and disrupt criminal activity,” says Sgt. Earl Keewatin from the Loon Lake RCMP. “This one resulted in us recovering dozens of pieces of stolen ID and financial cards – and removing an illegal firearm from our community.”

The investigation is ongoing.
