The local rugby community came together on April 16 at E.S. Laird Middle School for a special skills camp.

The event brought players of all ages and skill levels onto the field giving new players a chance to learn and experienced players a chance to lead.

“Last night was about teaching a couple of things and bringing everybody in the community that enjoys rugby together,” said E.S. Laird Sabres head coach Morgan Mann.

The camp welcomed students from several schools. Some players just starting out, others, however, had years of experience.

“We had some students or players out there that have played quite a few years,” said Mann, noting some have played high-level rugby.

Several local rugby leaders were also on hand to help including those from the Lloydminster Reapers rugby.

“Some of the Reapers and the adults in the community that keep the sport alive in town like Jo Tichkowsky and her son, Monty (were there),” said Mann, adding Monty once played for Team Canada.

Mann explained the rugby community is known for being inclusive.

“It’s really supportive and good about making newcomers feel welcome,” he said. “It gives them a safe introduction into what rugby’s all about.”

Meanwhile, that welcoming spirit could be seen on the field.

“Older players were good with the younger players. It’s just such a supportive, encouraging environment,” said Mann.

Mann says rugby helps athletes build character.

“You treat the refs, your teammates, and your opponents with respect,” he said. “That’s really important.”

Rugby in Lloydminster runs year-round but often centres around E.S. Laird.

“The Reapers of the rugby community in Lloyd have had a great relationship with E.S. Laird,” said Mann. “That’s been their home base over the years.”

Though College Park School doesn’t have a team, Mann said their students are always welcome to join E.S. Laird or Bishop Lloyd teams and hopes events like the skills camp show kids rugby is an option.

“It’s a great option for a young person,” he said.

Other schools like Holy Rosary and Lloydminster Comprehensive High School (LCHS) have also grown the game.

“Especially their ladies programs are really good,” said Mann. “They’ve got provincials and a path for Alberta.”

This year, both schools have boys teams.

Mann said the camp gave something back to the game that has given so much to him.

“As long as I’ve been a rugby player, which is now 26 years … I really value what this sport teaches,” said Mann. “This event speaks to the appreciation of the rugby community in Lloydminster and those who keep the sport alive.”
