Thick smoke poured from the industrial zone north of the CN Rail tracks on Range Road 14 on the afternoon of April 22.

The fire started around 1:30 p.m., sending tones to Blackfoot Fire and Rescue and the director of Protective Service and Emergency Management for the County of Vermilion River (County 9-1).

Fire crews arrived to find a fast-moving grass fire heading toward a shop and trees.

Firefighters and neighbours worked together to stop the flames using trucks, hoses, and wild land tools.

Just before 3 p.m., Blackfoot district fire chief John McGerrigle declared stop loss.

Crews stayed to put out hot spots and make sure the fire was fully out.

Officials are investigating the cause, but say it is not suspicious.

“Thanks to our volunteers and staff for answering the call,” read a social media post.

They also thanked local farmers, businesses, and EC911 dispatchers.

With warm weather and gusting winds expected, fire crews urge caution.

“If you see smoke, call 9-1-1,” said the post.
