The Town of Vermilion will see new paint commemorating a piece of history in the town.

The Lt. Col Craig Armoury Historical Society requested the town paint the crosswalk in front of the armoury at 53 St. and 50 Ave.

The words will read “Northwest Europe” with the word west being in white. Underneath will read 49th Battalion the Edmonton Regiment.

Administration did not want the paint to obscure the crosswalk in any capacity and requested the painting happen above and below the existing lines.

They also did not want this project to obstruct or distract from the visibility of the crosswalk.

Council was in favour of helping bring awareness to the history.

“Thank you for working so close with the armoury,” said Deputy Mayor Joshua Rayment. “I think it’s an important piece of history and retaining it and having this information provided is a good way to commemorate everything the military stands for and what they’ve done.”

Coun. Robert Snow echoed Rayment’s words.

“I often don’t agree with covering up crosswalks, but these people served our country and served the world for that matter,” said Snow. “I think honouring them however we can is very important.”

No request was made to maintain the painting at the crosswalk and at this current stage the painting, will be a one-off event, fading over time.

The painting of the words at the crosswalk will take place as crews are out painting other crosswalks for the season.

The item could come back to a future council meeting if the group decides to repaint the crosswalk.
