Lloydminster is currently under a special weather statement due to the possibility of funnel clouds.
Environment Canada issued the weather statement at 11:39 a.m. on June 23, noting a weak landspout tornado is possible.
“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly -rowing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground,” read the statement. “However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify.”
The weather service says it will issue tornado watches and warnings if conditions become more favourable.
“Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances,” says Environment Canada.
“Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.”
