The initiative targets key routes in Swift Current, Prince Albert, North Battleford, and Estevan. The goal is to better connect local roads to the provincial highway network.

“Once completed, these projects will improve key transportation links,” Gartner said in a news release. “This benefits local traffic and keeps our export-based economy moving.”

Major Projects in Swift Current

Swift Current will receive the largest share of the funding. The province is investing $6.9 million into two major projects:

  • UHCP Funding: $4 million will go toward rehabilitating 8.5 kilometres of roads. This includes four ramps on the Trans-Canada Highway.
  • Capital Project: An additional $2.9 million will fix 5.4 kilometres of ministry-managed service roads.

Work in Swift Current is expected to begin in late spring and finish by late fall.

Upgrades Across the Province

Other cities will also see significant roadwork this year:

  • North Battleford: Territorial Drive will be widened and repaved. The province is providing $747,000, while the city will contribute $243,000.
  • Prince Albert: The province is investing $180,000 for work on 15th Street East. This supports a larger $13-million provincial project in the area.
  • Estevan: Approximately $400,000 will be used to resurface Highway 47 from Wellock Road to the north city limit.

Province-Wide Maintenance

The program also allocates $3.6 million for general road maintenance. This funding will support 14 different communities, including Regina, Saskatoon, and Moose Jaw. Additionally, the province will fund a transportation study in the Humboldt region.

The Ministry of Highways warns motorists to expect delays in construction zones. Drivers are reminded to obey all signage and stay alert for workers. Updated road conditions are available via the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline.
