Smith said the decision follows years of public debate and feedback, including a 2021 referendum that showed Albertans were closely divided on the issue. She said the government believes it is time to provide consistency by ending the twice-yearly time change.

Under the plan, Alberta would remain on a single time year-round, though details on whether the province will adopt permanent standard time or daylight time have not been finalized.

Smith said the change will require coordination with neighbouring jurisdictions and could involve legislative steps before taking effect.

The premier added the government will share more information in the coming months, including timelines for implementation.

Alberta currently changes its clocks twice a year, in line with most Canadian provinces.
