Some late April snow left Pitch-in Week a little behind schedule.

The yearly event runs from April 27 to May 3 and typically begins with a big cleanup event, which had to be postponed due to snow and cold temperatures.

“We usually have a big cleanup event, but due to the weather right now, we’re postponing that for a later date this week,” said Johan Jones, manager of waste and environmental programs, City of Lloydminster.

The event has been going on for a number of years, with the city encouraging people to start the spring cleanup in their own space.

“After spring comes, we see the snow leaving again and we know there’s a lot of garbage. So, Pitch-In was organized to help bring the community together to help clean up,” said Lloydminster Mayor Gerald Aalbers. “I encourage people to start in their own yards. If they are adjacent to a park, they can help out that way.”

Jones said it’s about bringing the community together to help beautify ahead of summer.

Although the cleaning may be temporarily halted, the Pitch-In Week fun still continued for the kids.

“We’re here at the school of École Sans-Frontières with the kids, looking at our collection trucks that we have throughout the community,” said Jones, noting the kids will also get donuts as part of the event.

The week wraps up with the annual hazardous materials roundup.

“At the end (of the week) we have our household hazardous roundup located at the exhibition grounds,” said Jones.

Temperatures are expected to rise by the end of the week and students will have the opportunity to clean around their school.
