The Lloydminster RCMP crime reduction unit began investigating on April 28 after reports of break and enters at several active sites. Police were later alerted to suspected stolen items being sold online.
With help from the public and the local detachment, officers identified a suspect. Police said they observed the man selling suspected stolen property near 31 St. and 57 Ave. before arresting him.
Investigators confirmed one of the items sold had been reported stolen and exchanged for cash.
Following the arrest, officers executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence, where they recovered a significant quantity of stolen goods.
Jamie Alexander Simons has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and two counts of trafficking in stolen property under $5,000.
Simons was released following a hearing before a justice of the peace and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Lloydminster on May 19.
Police say much of the recovered property has already been returned to local businesses and efforts are ongoing to identify and return remaining items.
RCMP continue to investigate and are reminding residents to secure property and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight or unattended.
Anyone with information about property crimes is asked to contact Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8400 or submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
