The County of Vermilion River issued a public update on June 12 stating that the twister struck during a severe weather watch issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada. A critical alert was broadcast by Alberta Emergency Alerts at 5:33 p.m. warning residents of a possible tornado northeast of the community.

Protective services officers immediately began co-ordinating relief efforts alongside the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, local emergency responders, utility companies and regional industry.

Officials confirmed that while no one was hurt, several agricultural and industrial sites sustained structural damage. Power outages hit the area following the storm, but utility crews have since restored electricity to all affected customers.

Public works crews are currently assessing local roads and clearing fallen trees. Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area while crews continue to mitigate ongoing hazards.

A team of investigators from Western University’s Northern Tornadoes Project has confirmed the touchdown and will be conducting a field investigation to determine the exact strength and path of the twister.

County officials are advising residents and visitors to monitor the municipality’s official website and Facebook page for further updates.
