The Town of Vermilion is applying for a provincial tax credit to recover unpaid education property taxes.

The Government of Alberta’s Provincial Education Requisition Credit provides municipalities with a tax credit on unpaid education property taxes from delinquent oil and gas properties.
“Currently, the Town of Vermilion has three properties that we will apply for under this program,” said Marilyn Lavoie, the town’s director of corporate services. “The years range from 2019 to 2025, and if successful, we would receive $5,192.77 back.”
Lavoie noted the town couldn’t find records showing it had applied for the credit from 2019 onwards.
Mayor Robert Snow cautioned that approval is not guaranteed.
“Obviously it’s an application, so it’s something that might not be approved,” he said. “Maybe we should be setting up some conversations with the ministry and our MLA to make sure we get support to get these approved.”
Council passed a motion to support the submission to the Provincial Education Requisition Credit.
“It’s always good when we’re applying for money to come back to us,” Snow said.
