A traffic stop in Cold Lake last month led to the seizure of dozens of firearms and ammunition, along with multiple charges against a local resident.

Cold Lake RCMP say officers pulled over a vehicle on 50 Ave. at about 3:50 a.m. on Aug. 19. The driver was issued a 24-hour immediate roadside sanction and the vehicle was seized pending a search warrant.
After obtaining a warrant, police searched the vehicle the following day and located 72 long-barrel firearms and a crate of ammunition.
Police say the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was subject to a five-year firearms prohibition and has a history of firearm-related offences.
Christopher Lawrence Starchuk, 36, of Cold Lake, was arrested on Sept. 3 and charged with possession of firearms contrary to an order, possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized, resisting or obstructing a peace officer and breach of recognizance.
Starchuk was remanded into custody following a hearing before a justice of the peace. He was scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Cold Lake on Sept. 8.
