People who lack inside exposure to policing often believe all police forces are the same. Canada features numerous police agencies and services providing similar coverage to various communities and provinces.
While the territories are not explicitly listed here, they are policed exclusively by the RCMP.

For the purpose of this article, “police” refers specifically to sworn police officers, not peace officers such as municipal Community Peace Officers or other provincially appointed officers. Many municipalities, including Lloydminster, employ their own peace officers, but this piece focuses strictly on police officers.
Provincial, regional and municipal police services derive their authority from provincial acts, which also establish geographic boundaries that RCMP officers do not face. Conversely, the RCMP Act and section 56 of the Criminal Code apply exclusively to members of the RCMP.
RCMP authority extends across Canada, whereas other services face jurisdiction limits, most often defined by provincial borders.
For example, if an Edmonton Police Service officer travels to Lloydminster on duty, their authority ends at the Saskatchewan border. If they know in advance that their work requires crossing into Saskatchewan, they can request temporary police or peace officer status in that province for a specific duration.
Canada relies on three main levels of policing: federal, provincial and municipal. The RCMP manages federal and international policing, including security for major events such as G7 summits hosted in Canada.
During the 2010 G8 summit in Ontario (prior to Russia’s suspension in 2014), hundreds of RCMP officers deployed from across the country, working alongside Canadian Armed Forces members and the Ontario Provincial Police. Because the OPP holds jurisdiction in Ontario, they led the planning and execution of protective operations for visiting world leaders.
If municipal or regional police services deploy officers to such events outside their home province, those members must be granted supernumerary constable status in the host province to exercise police powers. Because RCMP officers hold federal authority across Canada, no additional authorization is required to operate outside a primary jurisdiction. For the 2010 summit, RCMP officers simply packed their kit, flew to Ontario and went to work.
As Canada’s national police service, the RCMP provides contract policing to provinces, territories and municipalities. The force retains a paramilitary structure reflecting its military history — retaining the rank of corporal, which most municipal services bypass when promoting from constable to sergeant. The yellow stripe on RCMP dress trousers remains a symbolic link to historical cavalry origins.
While Canadian police services share broad similarities, these distinct jurisdictional and organizational boundaries set them apart.
