The Parkinson Association of Alberta is bringing its 14th annual Step ‘n Stride fundraising walk to Lloydminster on Sept. 19, and organizers say the event is about more than just raising money.

“The biggest thing that we know about people with Parkinson’s is that sometimes, it’s really hard to get out and to be out in the community and to make friends and to connect with other people who are affected by Parkinson’s disease,” said Lana Tordoff, executive director of the Parkinson Association of Alberta.
“So, more than anything it’s a community event but of course it’s also a really important fundraiser for our organization.”
The annual Step ‘n Stride event is being held in communities across Alberta on Sept. 19 and 20, including Lloydminster, Lethbridge, Olds, Red Deer and Grande Prairie.
Tordoff said funds raised from the walk account for over 20 per cent of the association’s annual budget.
“It makes sure that we are able to deliver on our promise of supporting people every day throughout their journeys.”
More than what you see
Tordoff said public awareness of Parkinson’s disease has grown thanks to advocates like Canadian entertainer Michael J. Fox, who lives with the condition.
But she noted that what people see on the outside is only part of the story.
“What you see on the outside is only a small part of the disease itself, so what somebody is going through – there’s way more to it than what you can see,” Tordoff said.
The Step ‘n Stride walk provides an opportunity for those affected by Parkinson’s — patients, caregivers and families — to come together and support one another.
