Border City Connects’ Play It Forward hockey fundraiser hit the ice in the Cenovus Energy Hub for the first time.
“We’ve got about 50 amazing hockey heroes to help us develop and facilitate this great event,” said Mike Sidoryk, Border City Connects interim executive director. “It’s a 12-hour charitable hockey game. We have four teams; they each will play about six hours today.”

All 48 players raised individual entry fees for the tournament, with fundraising totals tracked and updated online.
“All those donations go right to help support Border City Connects’ greatest needs,” said Sidoryk.
The funding helps cover costs of maintenance and repairs, amongst other needs for the organization.
“The fees we charge and the donations we receive barely cover our operating expenses,” said Sidoryk. “It’s very difficult to replace these $150,000 buses.”

Additionally, Border City Connects is also hosting a silent auction, which ends Sunday (April 19).
“You can access it by going to our website and there’s a link that’ll get you to the silent auction, which goes until Sunday night at 9 o’clock,” said SIdoryk. “There’s some great prizes here and some great gifts. Every dollar counts.”
He also spoke about the various services they offer, including transporting residents where they need to go.
“Our express division runs our para-transit service. That is where we take individuals with disabilities to all their appointments,” he said. “We have our medical caravan division, which supports people getting to their non-emergency medical trips between Edmonton to Saskatoon and all the points in between.”
The livestream of the hockey games can be viewed at BorderCityConnects.com/play-it-forward.
