The report, released April 22, follows months of provincewide consultations with industry experts, Indigenous communities and municipalities. It provides a framework for the provincial government to develop a formal nuclear energy roadmap.

Nathan Neudorf, minister of affordability and utilities, said the feedback from Albertans indicates a clear interest in nuclear energy as a reliable, emissions-free power source.

“Now is the time to plan for Alberta’s energy future,” Neudorf said in a statement. “This report will ensure we do so in a way that is safe, beneficial and shaped directly by the people who call Alberta home.”

The panel, chaired by Parliamentary Secretary Chantelle de Jonge, recommended that the province enhance public education on nuclear technology and strengthen coordination with federal regulatory bodies.

The report also emphasized the importance of long-term policy dialogue with Indigenous groups and Métis Settlements regarding project reviews.

Engagement data included in the report shows that nearly 6,000 Albertans responded to public surveys, while the panel met with more than 30 Indigenous communities and 51 municipal representatives.

Dustin Wilkes, CEO of Nucleon Energy, said the move signals Alberta is becoming a serious jurisdiction for nuclear growth in North America.

“The opportunity extends well beyond power generation alone,” Wilkes said, noting the potential for specialized expertise and strengthened supply chains.

The provincial government will now review the panel’s recommendations to determine the next steps for implementation.
