“A request was received after the 2026 proclamations that were completed in November 2025,” explained city manager Dion Pollard.

This year marks a milestone for the signing of Treaty 6.

“As the community approaches the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6, this recognition holds added significance,” he said.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers acknowledged the significance of the milestone.

“I think it is important to acknowledge that it is 150 years for Treaty 6,” he said.

A sentiment that Coun. Michael Diachuk echoed.

“Our support of this contributes to our relationship to our First Nations’ community in recognizing we are partners,” he explained.

Diachuk also commented on his hope to see more done to honour the 150th anniversary.

“In my mind, I’m thinking, how do we make it more meaningful than just passing a motion,” he said. “If we truly value and embrace it, then what does it look like for us.

“I personally feel a little regret that we haven’t been able to anticipate this day in advance to be able to do something and contribute in some way, but we are where we are.”

Council passed the motion, honouring May 18-24 as Treaties Recognition Week.
