On June 12, the province announced it is seeking input from industry stakeholders, Indigenous organizations and agricultural producers to help shape the updated policy.

First introduced in 2011, the Renewable Fuels Standard requires fuel suppliers to blend low-carbon options, such as ethanol and biodiesel, into conventional gasoline and diesel to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Grant Hunter, minister of environment and protected areas, said in a statement that technologies and markets have evolved significantly over the last 15 years.

“This engagement will help ensure the standard reflects the realities and needs of today, supporting low-carbon fuels, attracting investment and creating jobs while keeping fuels reliable and affordable for Albertans,” Hunter said.

Officials say the standard stimulates local economic demand by using Alberta-produced feedstocks, including wheat, canola, forestry products, and organic waste.

According to the government, fuel suppliers are already exceeding the province’s minimum blending mandates.

Tara Sawyer, minister of agriculture and irrigation, said collaborating with local producers will help build standards that strengthen the agricultural sector.

Alberta currently holds the largest biodiesel and renewable diesel production capacity in Canada, anchored by major processing facilities in Lloydminster and Strathcona County.

The formal review of the standard is scheduled to wrap up by Jan. 1, 2027. The government plans to gather feedback through online and in-person workshops, written submissions, and stakeholder surveys over the summer, with the target of implementing the updated regulations by Jan. 1, 2028.
