Council approved the Neighbourhood Redevelopment Program policy at its June 22 regular meeting.

The program is designed for residential use to encourage and stimulate private and community investment in the revitalization, beautification and redevelopment of established residential neighbourhoods within the city.

“Ultimately, we want to rejuvenate neighbourhoods that already exist or are having troubles,” Katlin Ducherer, the city’s economic development officer, explained at the June 15 GPC meeting. “We want to redevelop neighbourhoods and that feel of a neighbourhood, not necessarily a single neighbourhood,”

The program focuses on improving neighbourhood appearance, safety, housing quality and long-term sustainability.

Through the policy, the city has a $100,000 budget approved for the program’s implementation.

“If we were to move forward with it, there’s limited pieces we can do, understanding that disposal, permitting, all those types of things do cost significant amounts,” she said. “We could be anywhere between three and six projects a year. If we look at just our derelict property or problem property list, there’s 40 plus on there.”

She explained the city compiled a list of properties that would qualify for the program.

“What we’ve drafted or think we’re going to consider to implement the program, is a list on the backend,” said Ducherer. “As we move through the judication of properties, if they’re on our list or within current areas, that would put them at a higher rating of potential funding.”
