Saskatchewan’s residential construction sector surged last month, with housing starts more than doubling year-over-year.

Data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) shows total housing starts in the province soared 100.3 per cent from June 2025 to June 2026, placing Saskatchewan second nationwide in year-over-year growth among provinces.
Multi-unit developments drove the spike, with apartments and townhomes jumping 146.6 per cent year-over-year. Single-family home starts also posted solid gains, rising 29.7 per cent.
“Housing starts are an important indicator of how many people and families are choosing to invest in Saskatchewan,” said Warren Kaeding, minister of trade and export development, in a statement. “New home construction is great news for our construction sector, creating jobs across the province and strengthening our economy.”
CMHC defines housing starts as the official start of construction, usually marked by pouring concrete footings.
The residential growth follows broader economic momentum in the province. Latest Statistics Canada figures show Saskatchewan’s 2025 real gross domestic product reached a record high of $85.4 billion — a 2.2 per cent increase, outstripping the national average growth rate of 1.7 per cent. Private capital investment in the province also grew 12 per cent last year to $13.6 billion, leading all Canadian provinces.
