The City of Lloydminster has updated its museum collections management policy.

First adopted in 2018 and last amended in 2022, the policy aims to ensure Lloydminster Museum and Archives administration complies with professional standards and ethical guidelines set by the Canadian Museums Association, the Museums Association of Saskatchewan and the Alberta Museums Association.
“It establishes a collections mandate and outlines requirements for the types of collections to be retained, as well as the processes for documenting, storing, appraising, conserving and deaccessioning artifacts,” explained Natalie Clysdale, manager of the Lloydminster Museum and Archives.
The updated policy is also a requirement for securing provincial funding.
“The policy is also required for many operational and project-based museum funding opportunities, including collections reorganization projects, exhibition grants, and government-funded programming,” she said. Annual operating funding from SaskCulture requires Administration to provide a copy of the Collections Management Policy to support eligibility.”
Coun. Michele Charles Gustafson asked how much the city receives through these grant opportunities.
“It changes a lot based on what we’re pledging to do,” Clysdale said. “If we’re pledging to do a lot of cultural programming that usually comes with a higher dollar amount.”
A new addition to the policy requires the city to make reasonable efforts to restore artifacts under appropriate conditions and maintain supporting documentation.
Coun. Michael Diachuk noted his experience at the museum while observing visitors from out of province.
“We do have people coming from across the country and visiting our museum,” he said. “Based on the conversation they were very impressed with not only our staff but the overall look of the museum as well.”
City council voted to approve the updated policy.
