Don’t believe everything you read on your screen. Whether it’s news on a social media feed or a text message sent to your phone — reader, beware.

On Tuesday, July 28, Saskatchewan RCMP issued a warning about a text message scam circulating in the Carnduff and Indian Head regions. The messages falsely claim to be from the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan and direct recipients to click an included link to pay an outstanding traffic ticket online or appear in court. They are fake.
Mounties advise anyone who receives one of these messages not to click any links, send money, or provide personal or financial information.
I felt compelled to write about this because I received one of these exact text messages a couple of weeks ago.
Being the gullible, trusting guy I am, I read that text and immediately felt sick to my stomach. I haven’t been pulled over in more than four years, I thought to myself. It didn’t take long to question the validity of the text, and luckily, Chels was there to assure me it was a scam.
The RCMP also recommend blocking the sender’s number, taking screenshots for records, and refraining from clicking any links or sending money.
The world can be a scary place, and when a 36-year-old millennial almost gets duped by these new-age scammers, I fear for others who may take things further by responding.
