The non-repayable funding, delivered through Alberta Student Aid, aims to reduce financial barriers for post-secondary students and help lower student debt upon graduation.
As part of the funding, the province has expanded the New Beginnings Bursary — a targeted program designed to help low-income students access high-demand training. Funding for the bursary increased by $7-million to a total of $12-million, expanding support from 1,000 students to 2,400 this school year.
“Investing in students is an investment in Alberta’s future,” said Advanced Education Minister Myles McDougall in a statement. “These supports help learners build in-demand skills while strengthening Alberta’s workforce and economy.”
To streamline access, 20 scholarships and awards have transitioned to an online application system through the Alberta Student Aid portal.
The province estimates that more than 50,000 students will benefit from the non-repayable awards this year. Overall, the government has made more than $1-billion in total student aid available for 2026-27.
Students seeking loans and grants, which opened for application on June 3, are advised to apply at least 60 days before their programs begin.
