Lloydminster approves $837,000 reserve draw for firefighter back pay

Lloydminster City Council has committed $837,399.77 from its Fire Rescue Services Operating Reserve to fund retroactive payments for local firefighters following the approval of a multi-year collective agreement.

The retroactive funding covers back pay for members of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 5182 for the period spanning Jan. 1, 2022, to Dec. 31, 2024.

According to city documents, the full wage adjustments stemming from the three-year agreement total $1,029,289.96 for the period between Jan. 1, 2022, and June 8, 2026. While $837,399.77 is being drawn from reserves, an additional $191,890.19 covering early 2026 retroactive pay will be absorbed through the city’s 2026 salaries and wages budget.

The agreement details negotiated annual wage increases for local fire personnel:

  • 2022: 3 per cent increase ($72,279.69 in retroactive pay)
  • 2023: 3 per cent increase ($159,993.24 in retroactive pay)
  • 2024: 3.15 per cent increase ($253,801.57 in retroactive pay)
  • 2025: $351,325.27 in retroactive pay

A separate recommendation was also brought forward to approve a subsequent one-year collective agreement spanning Jan. 1, 2025, to Dec. 31, 2025, committing an additional $143,000 from the reserve to settle retroactive payments for that single-year term.
