Battlefords RCMP said officers were called around 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 14 to a report that an armed man had been involved in an altercation with a security guard and fled the scene in a vehicle. Police began searching for the suspect and the vehicle.

About 40 minutes later, officers received a report that a man on a snowmobile had fired a gun at a residence on the First Nation. Police responded and located a man with a firearm on a snowmobile. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the suspect allegedly failed to stop, discarded the firearm and tried to flee. He was arrested at the scene.

Investigators determined the suspect was the same person involved in the earlier altercation. Police allege he also discharged a firearm at an individual during the incidents.

Mackenzie Wahobin, 24, of Red Pheasant Cree Nation, is charged with 11 offences, including flight from a peace officer, uttering threats, discharging a firearm with intent, possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order, carrying a concealed weapon and careless use of a firearm.

He also faces charges of possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number, operation of a conveyance while prohibited, possession of a prohibited weapon knowing possession was unauthorized and unlicensed possession of a prohibited weapon with ammunition.

Wahobin appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Monday.
